BAGHDAD, May 17, 2025 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas held a meeting on Saturday with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on the sidelines of the 34th Arab League Summit, which commenced today in Baghdad, Iraq.
During the meeting, President Abbas expressed deep appreciation for Spain’s steadfast and principled support of the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The President praised Spain’s recent joint statement with Norway, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, and Slovenia, which called on Israel to immediately reverse its current policies, fully lift the blockade on Gaza, ensure unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid, and condemned the escalating Israeli violence in the West Bank.
President Abbas briefed Prime Minister Sánchez on the latest developments in Palestine, particularly the ongoing Israeli assault on Gaza. He described the daily killings—including of women and children—alongside the three-month blockade that has deprived over two million people of food, water, medicine, and fuel.
He emphasized that the Gaza Strip is an inseparable part of the Palestinian state, under Palestinian political and legal jurisdiction, just like the rest of the occupied territories.
President Abbas also highlighted the growing attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, where armed settlers have been allowed to terrorize civilians, destroy property, and seize land without accountability.
He stressed the importance of supporting Palestine’s bid for full membership in the United Nations and increasing international recognition of Palestinian statehood as a means to preserve the two-state solution, which he said is being systematically dismantled by Israeli policies.
President Abbas reaffirmed the historic and fraternal ties between Palestine and Spain, expressing his commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations.
Prime Minister Sánchez reiterated Spain’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people and their just cause, calling for increased international pressure on Israel to end the war in Gaza using all legal avenues available under international law. He emphasized the urgent need to advance toward a political solution for lasting peace.
